Rochester Ice Hawks and Dell Ducks Victims of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

The three game series between the Ducks and Ice Hawks the weekend of Dec 15, 16, and 17 was shortened to a two game series due to CO poisoning. The third game of the series will be made up at a later date.

On Friday night, a couple of the players complained of flu like symptoms and early Saturday morning one of the coaches had severe headaches. Given the flu had been spreading through Minnesota, CO was not suspected.

On Saturday night, many more players exhibited flu like symptoms. After the game the Ice Hawks players and staff started piecing together the mystery. By the time the team returned to the hotel, the two teams had communicated with each other regarding the symptoms. At this point EMS was dispatched to the Ice Hawks hotel. 23 of the 28 players were treated with oxygen therapy at 3 local hospitals.

I was fortunate that I did not have to be treated. One of my players’ family attended the game and we chose to watch from the top row of bleachers. Given CO is heavier than air, this elevation spared me the more severe symptoms that the players experienced.

This story was well documented by local, regional, and national press. I’ve included links to some of the stories and interviews.

Windows 10 Preview

I started working with the Windows 10 preview last weekend. My interest was piqued after watching three videos from PCWizKids Tech Talk.

Windows 10 Technical Preview – First Look Part 1

Windows 10 Technical Preview – First Look Part 2

Windows 10 Technical Preview Part 3 – Performance Tests

I downloaded Build 9841 and installed it in Virtual Box on an Lenovo W530 laptop. The installation went well and most things worked right out of the box. I ran into network performance issues where YouTube videos were choppy. I was also frustrated by the fact that the screen resolution defaulted at 680x420.

My next test was to install it natively on the same Lenovo W530 laptop. Installation was very straight-forward. I used my Microsoft ID and chose express settings. Out of the box it supported both the wired and wireless network adapter. I was very impressed with this. Windows 7 did not support out of the box and it was always frustrating to go download the drivers and install them from a USB drive. What was more impressive is that all the drivers, including video, updated automatically! At the end of this process there were only 2 device drivers that it could not find. For anyone who has worked with a Lenovo W530, you’ll have to agree this is very impressive.

On the native test, I started loading standard applications – KeePass, Chrome, Firefox, Adobe Reader, Dropbox, Google Drive, Evernote, OpenOffice, and Office 2010. For the most part I didn’t have any issues installing any of these applications. I did see some minor issues with Firefox and Flash player. The one application that did not work for me was BoxCryptor Classic. It was not able to load it’s configuration file.

I ran across this video on YouTube that accurately portrays the issues with Build 9841.

Now that Build 9860 was released, I plan to run the same tests that I did on Build 9841.

Perfect Fall Day

Light frost this morning. Turned out to be a perfect fall day – light wind and temperature around 60.

Golfed in the morning and looked at some hunting ground in the afternoon.

How to fix broken search in Microsoft OneNote 2010

One of the best features in OneNote is the search capability. When it quit working today, it was quite frustrating. After doing a few Google searches and coming up empty, I looked at the Windows 7 search settings. Nothing appeared to be incorrect. OneNote would only search on the currently selected page. I decided to delete the cache file and let OneNote recreate it. After troubleshooting for 45 minutes this did the trick in the matter of a few seconds.

The cache file is typically found in the: C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\OneNote\14.0

With OneNote closed, using Windows Explorer go to that folder, find the OneNoteOfflineCache.onecache file and either rename it, move it or delete it.  I usually recommend renaming it so that if this fix doesn't work and you decide you want to you can always rename it back.

Intrepid Visit

I had the opportunity to spend a couple of hours touring the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum on Feb. 16. This was my first tour of an aircraft carrier. Even though the weather was rainy, it was worth the time and money. If anyone is in NY and has a few hours I highly recommend taking the tour.
